GHC warns against using toothpaste, olive oil and butter for burns

The GCC’s Health Council has warned against the use of toothpaste to treat first-degree burns suffered at home.

The Council explained that toothpaste contains chemicals that may initially give a cooling effect while causing inflammation.

Furthermore, the Council reiterated its warnings against using olive oil and butter to treat burns, which cause heat retention inside the burns.

The Council indicated that to avoid any dangerous complications, one must take certain steps, including placing the burned area under lukewarm water for a period of 10 to 20 minutes, before applying creams and ointments to treat it, and taking painkillers if the pain is too severe.

However, if pain persists one must seek medical help or advice.
