Do Not Mix These with Other Fruits

You should avoid mixing berries and grapes with other fruits to benefit from the flavanol compound found in them, according to the Consumer Advisory Center in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

The centre explained that flavanols are biologically active compounds with significant health benefits, as they possess antioxidant properties.

Furthermore, the centre added that flavanol compounds only function in the body if they do not combine with a specific enzyme, known as polyphenol oxidase (PPO), which is found in 18 types of fruits and vegetables such as apples and bananas, as well as green tea.

The German centre explained that foods containing the enzyme PPO break down flavanols. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid mixing them with berries and grapes.

For instance, one can consume berries alone or with muesli in the morning, then have an apple or a banana as a snack in the afternoon.
