2023 The Year of Sustainability in The UAE

The declaration of 2023 as the year of sustainability by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, “God bless him”, represents the culmination of the UAE’s pioneering efforts in the field of environmental preservation, and paves the way for the UAE to host the “Conference Of Parties” (COP 28), held in the framework of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the largest international event in the field of climate action.

The UAE is working hard to make this event a milestone in global efforts aimed at addressing the threat of climate change, as it is heavily relying on it to find solutions that contribute to fully healing the planet.

Furthermore, the event represents an opportunity for the UAE to present its vision in this critical field.

The decision of designating this year as the “Year of Sustainability” has many indications, as it reminds us of the great efforts made by the founder and builder of the union, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan “God rest his soul”, in preserving the environment, which he saw as a key element of building the state, evidenced by the existence of dozens of environmental institutions and nature reserves of all kinds in the UAE.

In addition, the UAE is adopting clean energy generation, as the Barakah nuclear energy plants represent a global model in sustainable development.

When the UAE’s wise leadership first thought of the Barakah power plants, it aimed to reduce the carbon footprint at a state level, and after passing every test set by international institutions, the 14-year-long ambitious project began to bear fruit, represented in the preservation of the environment.

The UAE has always seen sustainability as a fundamental issue, and since its inception, the UAE has been a distinguished model in the field of environmental preservation.

Moreover, the late Sheikh Zayed “God rest his soul”, was a global leader and pioneer in the field of environmental and climate action, and left a remarkable legacy in this field, today our wise leadership follows his lead to create a better tomorrow for us, our children and generations to come.
