The United Arab Emirates and Sustainability

Global climate change is of utmost importance and requires the collective efforts of nations to ensure the sustainability of life on planet Earth. The UAE has been and continues to be keen on finding innovative and creative solutions for sustainability.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the UAE, has called for enhanced cooperation and collaboration among nations to address problems and challenges.

He stated that the UAE possesses significant potential in this field due to its qualified human resources and advanced infrastructure.

The late founder, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, was the pioneer of environmental awareness. He made remarkable contributions to sustainability and resource preservation.

One of his well-known statements in this context is: “We pay great attention to our environment as it is an integral part of our country, history, and heritage.” Following in his father’s footsteps, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed places great importance on the environment and sustainability.

The slogan “Today for Tomorrow,” announced by Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, designates 2023 as the Year of Sustainability. He emphasized that the concept of sustainability is a major national priority. The UAE is hosting the COP 28 conference from November 30 to December 12, 2023, aimed at unifying global efforts in the field of climate action and finding solutions to climate challenges.

The UAE is one of the first countries to enact legislation and laws that safeguard the environment. It is also a leader in planning and building sustainable cities, such as Masdar City, which was established in 2008 and relies entirely on clean energy.

Additionally, The Sustainable City in Dubai, built according to the three pillars of economic, environmental, and social sustainability, serves as a model to be emulated.

The late Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Center in Al Ain’s garden, designed with 80% recycled materials, is another example of sustainability in action.

Moreover, many diverse examples of sustainability can be found across the country.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai ranked first in the Middle East and North Africa region in the 2021 Smart and Sustainable Cities Index, issued by the International Institute for Administrative Development in partnership with the University of Singapore.

Furthermore, the UAE became the first country to produce clean, carbon-free nuclear energy. Dubai’s government became the world’s first 100% paperless government, showcasing the UAE’s remarkable progress and prosperity in the realm of sustainable environmental practices.

The United Arab Emirates’ commitment to sustainability and climate change is a source of pride and admiration for the state’s remarkable progress and prosperity, reflecting the great legacy established by the late founder, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
