The U.S. Air Force recently received its first two HH-60W Jolly Green II Combat Rescue helicopters. The delivery of the new model is crucial to the rescue mission, as the transition begins from the previous model, the HH-60G Pave Hawk, which has been in use for more than 26 years.
The new aircraft, based on the UH-60M Army helicopter, has been modified to perform the tasks of locating and rescuing downed pilots in hostile territory, and the HH-60W is designed to meet the requirements of the US Air Force to defeat long-range and highly-dangerous threats. The HH-60W will double the internal fuel capacity, without the use of additional fuel tanks, which need more space, and will be able to carry a greater range of weapons, defence systems and sensors that will be integrated into the copter to provide an unprecedented combination of range and survivability.
