South Korea launches the LPX-II aircraft carrier program

The South Korean Navy has officially confirmed the launch of the LPX-II aircraft carrier program, as part of its 2020-2024 medium-term defence plan. The announcement came as China and Japan adopted plans to build aircraft carriers with high capabilities, so South Korea joined the race, announcing plans to build a modified large surface aircraft carrier, based on the Korean Navy Dokdo amphibious warships.

South Korea has embarked on a series of land, air and sea acquisition programs that support Korea’s move toward developing a strong, deployable conventional force focused on deterrence.

The South Korean aircraft carrier relies on design elements from the Queen Elizabeth class of British Royal Navy aircraft carriers.
