South Korea launches new frigate with enhanced anti-submarine capabilities

South Korea is preparing to launch its new Chungnam frigate weighing 3600 tons, featuring enhanced anti-submarine and anti-aircraft capabilities.

The 129-metre-long frigate is the first vessel to be built as part of South Korea’s frigate acquisition program codenamed “FFX Batch-III”, under which South Korea plans to build a total of six 3,600-ton frigates to replace ageing frigates and corvettes.

It is equipped with a 5-inch gun, anti-ship guided missiles, ship-to-surface tactical missiles, long-range anti-submarine torpedoes, as well as a local multifunctional radar system capable of detecting and tracking multiple targets from all directions.
