Japan will begin tests of a new submarine developed for its Navy. This submarine, which was named “White Whale”, belongs to the new modified Taigei class of submarines, and Japan plans to provide its Navy with seven submarines of this type.
The most important thing that distinguishes the new generation of Japanese submarines from the previous Taigei submarines is that they have new diesel and electric engines and advanced lithium-ion batteries, such as those used in modern Soryu submarines.
Each of the new Taigei submarines has a length of 84 meters, a width of 9.1 meters, a displacement of 3,000 tons, and a crew of 70 people. The rest of the technical and combat characteristics of these submarines are still not officially announced yet.
