India test-fires a nuclear ballistic missile

India’s Defense Research and Development Organization, known as DRDO, has announced that it has successfully test-fired the Agni P surface-to-surface ballistic missile, capable of carrying nuclear and conventional warheads with a range of 2,000 km.

A statement by India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) said it was a containerized missile with a range of 1,000 to 2,000 km.

The statement added that several radar and telemetry stations based along the eastern coast of India tracked and monitored the missile, adding that “the missile followed its specified trajectory, and met all mission objectives with a high level of accuracy.”

Congratulating DRDO, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said on his Twitter account: “Several advanced technologies have been introduced including vehicles, propulsion systems, innovative guidance and control mechanisms and modern navigation systems. The Agni-B missile will enhance India’s reliable deterrence capabilities.”
