Japan develops large multi-mission unmanned submarines

Japan is developing large multi-mission unmanned submarines. Japan’s ATLA (Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency) showcased for the first time the design of its XLUUV.

The XLUUV is modular, therefore its length ranges from 10 to 15 metres and its diameter is 1.8 meters. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) is the main contractor.

According to ALTA, the XLUUV will be capable of long-distance deployment with high reliability, resilience and survivability under the circumstance where support by surface ships is unavailable.

Furthermore, it can adapt to a wide variety of operations such as ASW, ASuW, mine warfare, ISR and electronic warfare.
