The Arab League & Syria’s Return

The main dilemma facing Arab conflict issues is the internationalization of crises, where the tools of the international system are the effective ones, while the Arab system remains only an observer.

Consequently, one of the reasons for prolonging the Syrian crisis was the way the international system (UN Security Council) operated, which created fertile ground for the continuation of the conflict and reduced the chance of reaching a political settlement.

There was no clear vision for a political solution to the Syrian crisis recently.

Furthermore, international interventions in the Syrian crisis turned Syrian territory into a battleground between Russia and the US.

The current political movement in the Arab arena towards the Syrian file undoubtedly represents an important step towards reactivating and revitalizing the role of the Arab League, moving it beyond the observer role to become an effective and influential system in Arab issues.

This will subsequently reduce the level of international interventions in Arab affairs.

Moreover, this growing Arab political movement towards Syria will undoubtedly be a significant step towards recalibrating the compass to broaden the prospects for a political solution and limit the scope of the conflict, as there is no one keener than Arab countries to achieve security and stability in Syria, given that developments in Syria have a significant impact on achieving stability in the region.

The historic decision taken by the Arab League to end the suspension of Damascus’ membership, after nearly 11 years, constitutes a major breakthrough in the Syrian crisis unseen since its inception, as political channels with the Syrian regime remained closed, leading to the failure of political initiatives.

However, the return of Syria to the Arab League serves to reopen the political communication lines between Arabs and the Syrian regime, creating a fertile ground that contributes to bridging viewpoints and formulating a political approach that ends the ongoing conflict in Syria.

The changes occurring in the Arab political landscape, starting with the adoption of a policy of containment towards Syria, represent an important step in the project of reducing external influence in Arab affairs.

Moreover, those who closely follow the recent approach of the Arab League and the political movement towards Syria can clearly see the adoption of a new roadmap that seeks to redefine its role as an active and influential system in Arab political dynamics.

This is an important step towards consolidating the pillars of stability in a region that has suffered greatly from the performance of the international system, represented by the UN Security Council and the United Nations.
