Experts Warn of Risks of Artificial Intelligence in Fraud and Theft

Artificial Intelligence-based chatbot applications, known as “chatbots,” can perform various useful functions such as writing messages, summaries, articles, and stories in a specific writing style, as well as writing software code. however, artificial intelligence technologies open the door to increasing risks of cybercrimes.

In its latest report, the German Federal Office for Information Security stated that the new technology “poses new risks to information security and increases potential risks for some known threats to information technology security.”

Behind every chatbot application, there’s a linguistic model that can process written natural language using a specific automated pattern.

The most renowned chatbots include OpenAI’s “GPT” model used in “ChatGPT” and “Bing” chat platforms and Google’s “PaLM” model, used in the “Bard” chat platform.

According to the German Federal Office for Information Security, the known threats include the possibility of developing artificial intelligence language models and using them to develop or update better spyware programs, as well as creating random or fraudulent emails that exploit users’ human traits, such as the desire to help, trust, or even fear, known as “social engineering.”

Language models can also modify the writing style of a specific text to resemble the writing style of a specific person or organization so that it can be used to deceive others.

Moreover, random and fraudulent messages written using artificial intelligence techniques lack common spelling and grammatical errors in such types of emails, making those messages more convincing.

The German Federal Office for Information Security also warned of the possibility of internet criminals and hackers using any audio recording to produce fake conversations and steal important information from victims.

Furthermore, information security experts warn that language models could be used to produce fake news, hate speech or political propaganda.

Therefore, users of electronic devices should exercise caution regarding content produced using artificial intelligence.

Due to their often absence of linguistic errors, texts written using artificial intelligence techniques give a strong impression of being genuine human texts, making them trustworthy, even if they are inappropriate and contain incorrect or manipulated facts.
