United States Army Announces Successful Integration of M789 Guided Rounds on Apache Helicopters

The United States Army, in cooperation with Northrop Grumman and Boeing, has announced the successful integration of M789 HEDP rounds equipped with proximity fuzes onto the AH-64E Apache Guardian in February 2026.

The upgraded munitions provide enhanced capability to engage moving and concealed targets with high precision, without requiring a direct impact. This significantly strengthens close air support effectiveness while reducing the risk of collateral damage.

The M789 HEDP rounds rely on an advanced radar–optical sensing system, enabling detonation in close proximity to the target to maximise coverage and lethality. The proximity-based airburst effect expands the engagement envelope, particularly against dispersed or partially shielded threats.

The development is expected to drive modernisation efforts across allied Apache fleets and establish a rare benchmark for medium-calibre smart munitions, reinforcing the helicopter’s role as a highly adaptable and precise battlefield asset.
