The European Journal of Epidemiology has warned that tattoo inks may raise the risk of developing melanoma, a dangerous form of skin cancer.
According to the report, certain tattoo pigments can contain carcinogenic chemicals, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, aromatic amines, and heavy metals. When injected into the skin, this ink is treated by the body as a foreign substance, triggering an immune response.
Experts noted that some tattoo colours may also break down into harmful compounds, a process that becomes more likely with exposure to sunlight in the period following the tattoo. These chemicals may contribute to cellular damage that increases cancer risk.
