Taiwan Tests New Hai Kun-Class Submarine

Taiwan has entered a crucial phase in the development of its indigenous Hai Kun-class military submarine, as the vessel undergoes final harbour acceptance tests. Following the completion of these trials, the submarine will move to sea trials, which are expected to conclude by October 2025. The Hai Kun is slated for official delivery to the Taiwanese Navy in November.

The Hai Kun submarine represents a significant step forward in Taiwan’s naval modernisation efforts. With a submerged displacement of 2,500 tons, the submarine is capable of diving to depths of up to 350 meters. It will be armed with 533mm Mk48 heavyweight torpedoes, a proven American-made weapon system designed to target both underwater threats and large surface vessels.

Future versions of Taiwan’s submarines are also planned to be equipped with Harpoon anti-ship missiles, further boosting their maritime strike capabilities.
