Hanwha Ocean is developing new warships for the Republic of Korea Navy that will be supported by artificial intelligence technologies.
The hulls are being designed to be strong yet lightweight and to have a reduced radar signature to help evade enemy detection. The ships will be armed with a broad mix of weapons intended to counter a variety of threats, including missiles, aircraft, guided projectiles and kamikaze-style loitering munitions.
While the new vessels are expected to be similar in size to South Korea’s current combatants, leaked details indicate their distinguishing feature will be advanced AI-based software. That software is intended to simplify crew interactions with the ship’s systems and weapons, improving operational control and responsiveness.
