Rolls-Royce has successfully completed altitude and operational testing of its F130 turbofan engine in collaboration with the United States Air Force. The tests form part of the engine replacement programme aimed at modernising the B-52 Stratofortress, converting it to the B-52J variant by replacing the ageing TF33 engines with more efficient and reliable powerplants.
Derived from the commercial BR725 family, the F130 offers extended range and improved fuel efficiency, enabling the bomber to remain in service until 2050. The upgrade also enhances the United States’ strategic deterrence capabilities while reducing reliance on in-flight refuelling, marking a significant milestone in military aircraft modernisation.
