Norway’s Ministry of Defence has announced significant progress in its joint submarine programme with Germany, a multi‑billion‑dollar initiative centred on the acquisition of next‑generation Type 212CD (Common Design) submarines.
The 212CD features a distinctive diamond‑shaped external design, intended to reduce its underwater signature and scatter hostile sonar waves, making detection by adversaries extremely difficult. This design marks a substantial leap in stealth compared to previous submarine classes.
In addition to heavy torpedoes, the submarine has been designed to launch Naval Strike Missiles (NSM) while submerged, significantly enhancing its offensive reach and flexibility across maritime combat scenarios.
