US defence giant Lockheed Martin has announced the successful testing of Project Overwatch on the F-35 Lightning II, integrating advanced artificial intelligence capabilities into the aircraft’s data fusion system.
The trial enabled the fighter to classify unknown targets and retrain its operational model in real time, significantly reducing decision-making latency in complex combat environments. By embedding AI-driven analysis within its mission systems, the F-35 evolves from a fifth-generation stealth platform into an intelligent analytical node capable of rapid, autonomous support to the pilot.
The development enhances operational superiority against Anti-Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) architectures and enables continuous over-the-air updates, extending the aircraft’s service life. It also signals a broader transformation in defence maintenance and upgrade standards, where software-driven evolution becomes central to sustaining airpower dominance.
