Japan Unveils Advanced EC-2 Electronic Warfare Aircraft

Japan has unveiled its new EC-2 electronic warfare aircraft, marking a significant step forward in strengthening its dominance across the electromagnetic battlespace.

Developed from the Kawasaki C-2 transport platform, the EC-2 is designed to disrupt enemy radar and communication systems from safe stand-off distances, in line with a “long-range jamming” operational concept. The aircraft enables Japan to project electronic attack capabilities while minimising exposure to hostile defences.

The programme is intended to replace the ageing EC-1 platform, with plans to introduce four new aircraft, effectively doubling operational capacity. In addition to electronic attack missions, the EC-2 is capable of conducting intelligence-gathering operations, enhancing situational awareness while reducing operational risk.

Built on advanced domestic technologies, the programme will be implemented in two phases extending through to 2032. The development reflects Japan’s broader strategic shift towards reinforcing electronic superiority as a decisive factor in modern warfare.
