Japan Bolsters its Naval Fleet with ‘Thunder Whale’ Submarine

Japan’s naval forces have received a significant boost with the introduction of a new Taigei-class submarine, named ‘Thunder Whale.’ This advanced vessel is the fourth of its class to be developed for the Japanese Navy, reflecting the country’s ongoing efforts to enhance its maritime defence capabilities.

The ‘Thunder Whale’ is powered by a state-of-the-art diesel-electric engine, delivering 6,000 horsepower. This propulsion system enables the submarine to operate underwater at speeds of up to 20 knots.

With a length of 84 metres and a beam of 9.1 metres, the vessel displaces approximately 3,000 tonnes of water.

Designed to accommodate a crew of 70 personnel, the new submarine is equipped with formidable weaponry. It features 533mm torpedoes and is also armed with Harpoon missiles, providing it with strong anti-ship capabilities.
