India has taken a significant step in advancing its air defence capabilities with the successful test launch of the Astra air-to-air missile from the indigenous Tejas light combat aircraft. Designed to engage aerial threats at ranges exceeding 100 kilometres, the Astra is equipped with advanced guidance and navigation systems, ensuring high precision in operational scenarios.
Currently in service with the Indian Air Force, the Astra missile is already integrated into the Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet and is gradually being adapted for use on the Tejas and the MiG-29 fleet operated by the Indian Navy.
Additionally, India is developing the Astra Mk-3, an extended-range variant capable of reaching 350 kilometres, positioning it among the most advanced air-to-air missiles in its class.
