How to Tell the Difference Between a Cold and Hay Fever

The German Allergy and Asthma Association has highlighted that the symptoms of the common cold and pollen allergy—commonly known as hay fever—can often appear similar. However, experts note that there are key differences that can help distinguish between the two conditions.

One of the main indicators is nasal discharge. In the case of a cold, mucus is typically yellowish to green in colour and tends to be thicker in consistency. By contrast, hay fever is usually associated with clear, more watery mucus.

Sneezing patterns also differ. Frequent and sudden sneezing fits are more characteristic of pollen allergy, often occurring outdoors or when leaving a room. In comparison, sneezing caused by a cold tends to be more occasional and less intense.

Another distinguishing symptom is itching. A tingling or itching sensation in the nose, eyes, or throat is a strong indication of hay fever, as the common cold generally does not cause irritation in the mucous membranes.

The association added that individuals suffering from pollen allergy can ease their symptoms with antihistamines, which are available in various forms, including tablets, eye drops, and nasal sprays.
