Germany has launched a major project to modernise and upgrade its renowned Type 212A military submarines.
The first phase of the programme will see navigation and combat systems overhauled on four submarines, with the aim of aligning them with the latest technological standards. These upgrades are intended to ensure compatibility with Germany’s future Type 212CD diesel-electric submarines, which are being developed in collaboration with Norway.
Each Type 212A submarine measures 56.3 meters in length and 6.8 meters in width, with a displacement of 1,480 tonnes. The submarines are capable of diving to depths of up to 350 meters, operating at speeds of 20 knots, and remaining on missions for up to 30 days without the need for resupply.
Armed with six 533 mm torpedo tubes, these submarines offer advanced underwater combat capabilities and will continue to play a vital role in Germany’s naval defence strategy.
