The war in Ukraine has reignited concerns over ballistic missile threats and the growing challenge of hypersonic weapons, driving France to modernise its Nostradamus radar system. The upgrade marks a crucial step towards providing Europe with an independent early warning capability, reducing reliance on US-operated systems.
The advanced Nostradamus radar is designed to detect a wide range of aerial threats, including multi-warhead ballistic missiles, hypersonic projectiles travelling at speeds above Mach 5, and even high-altitude balloons. In addition, it can track conventional aircraft and other unconventional airborne objects, offering a comprehensive surveillance and warning solution.
By enhancing detection and tracking in real time, the system provides Europe with greater resilience against emerging threats in an increasingly contested security environment.
