France has commenced the first sea trials of its fourth Barracuda-class nuclear-powered attack submarine, SSN De Grasse, on 24 February 2026. The milestone was achieved through cooperation between the Direction générale de l’armement (DGA) and Naval Group.
The submarine is equipped with MdCN naval cruise missiles, F21 heavyweight torpedoes and SM39 Exocet anti-ship missiles. It operates using the advanced SYCOBS combat management system, designed to enhance situational awareness and mission coordination in complex maritime theatres.
Incorporating pump-jet propulsion technology to significantly reduce acoustic signature, SSN De Grasse is engineered for stealth and endurance, with the capacity to remain at sea for more than 270 days.
The introduction of SSN De Grasse represents a strategic leap in France’s non-nuclear deterrence posture and strengthens its maritime superiority, particularly across the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The programme has also accelerated industrial production cycles, with future submarine construction timelines expected to be reduced by up to 40 per cent.
