China Develops World’s Largest Laser Crystal to Target Satellites from Earth

Chinese scientists have announced the successful development of the world’s largest barium gallium selenide (BGSe) crystal, a breakthrough aimed at enhancing long-range laser systems and significantly advancing infrared sensing technologies.

The synthetic crystal, measuring 60 millimetres (approximately 2.36 inches) in diameter, was developed by researchers at the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It can convert short-wave infrared laser beams into mid-wave and long-wave infrared beams, which can travel great distances through the atmosphere with exceptionally low energy loss.
