The Department of National Defence has announced the successful first live-fire test of the MK 54 torpedo launched from the HMCS Regina of the Royal Canadian Navy near Nanoose Bay between 2 and 4 February 2026.
The milestone forms part of a US$387 million programme to replace ageing MK 46 torpedoes with more advanced systems produced by Raytheon. The MK 54 features advanced digital processing and enhanced sonar capabilities, optimised for operations in shallow-water environments.
The torpedo will be integrated across Halifax-class frigates, P-8A Poseidon aircraft and CH-148 Cyclone helicopters, strengthening maritime readiness and deterrence. The move underscores a broader shift towards modernising existing platforms with integrated smart technologies to enhance operational effectiveness across the fleet.
