The German Society for Functional Diagnostics and Therapy has reported that neck pain may sometimes stem from a disorder of the masticatory system, known as craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD).
According to the society, craniomandibular dysfunction is a broad term that encompasses disorders affecting the interaction between the jaw joints, chewing muscles, and teeth. The condition can arise from various causes, including psychological stress and teeth grinding (bruxism).
Symptoms of CMD may include muscle tension, inflammation, jaw displacement, jaw pain, clicking or popping in the jaw joint, and difficulty opening the mouth. The condition can also manifest as neck and shoulder pain, headaches, and in some cases, ear pain.
Treatment typically involves a combination of pain relief medication, jaw massages, relaxation exercises, and the use of occlusal splints to alleviate strain on the jaw joint.
