The German Patient Safety Alliance has warned that sepsis, also known as blood poisoning, constitutes a medical emergency requiring immediate medical attention.
The organisation emphasised that calling emergency services without delay is critical, as timely treatment can mean the difference between life and death.
According to the alliance, sepsis occurs when the body’s immune system overreacts to an infection, attacking its own tissues and organs. If left untreated, the condition can rapidly lead to organ failure and death.
Warning Signs
Experts highlighted several symptoms that may indicate the onset of sepsis, including:
Extreme fatigue and weakness
Confusion or loss of concentration
Shortness of breath or rapid breathing
Accelerated heart rate or palpitations
Low blood pressure
Severe, unexplained pain
