China’s Revolutionary LY-1 Laser Weapon for Naval and Land Defence

China has unveiled the LY-1, an advanced laser weapon system that marks a significant leap in its naval and ground-based defences. Designed to protect warships against missiles and drones, the LY-1 demonstrates particular effectiveness against unmanned aerial vehicles by either disabling their optical sensors or destroying their airframes through concentrated heat. Crucially, it delivers these effects at a low cost per shot, relying on electrical power rather than conventional munitions.

The system operates through a large circular aperture that directs a precise laser beam at designated targets. Equipped with advanced infrared electro-optical cameras and next-generation sensors, the LY-1 ensures accurate detection, tracking, and engagement.

By fielding this capability, Beijing is strengthening its position in the race for directed-energy weapons, adding a new strategic dimension to its deterrence and defence posture.
