The British Army has successfully conducted trials of the new Lightweight Command Launch Unit (LWCLU) for the Javelin missile system, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing modernisation of the system’s capabilities against long-range threats.
As part of the testing, the LWCLU successfully engaged a target at a distance of 4 kilometres — the longest range ever achieved by this lighter and more compact version of the launcher.
The Javelin missile system gained global prominence during the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war, where Ukrainian forces used it to destroy multiple Russian tanks, earning nicknames such as the “Tank Killer”.
The upgraded LWCLU is designed to be 30 percent smaller and 25 percent lighter than its predecessor, enabling troops to transport and deploy the system more rapidly and with greater ease on the battlefield.
