Saab Bolsters Swedish Submarine Fleet with HMS Halland

Defence company Saab has launched the HMS Halland submarine, equipped with advanced technologies and systems to enhance Sweden’s naval capabilities. The vessel measures 60.4 metres in length, 6.2 metres in width, and has a draft of 5.6 metres. It has a surface displacement of 1,240 tonnes, increasing to 1,490 tonnes when submerged.

In terms of propulsion, the HMS Halland features a hybrid power system. It is equipped with two diesel engines, each generating 1,300 horsepower (970 kW), along with two Stirling engines producing 101 horsepower (75 kW) each. This configuration optimises performance when operating in full electric propulsion mode. The main electric motor, with an output of 1,800 horsepower (1,300 kW), ensures the submarine maintains its speed even while submerged.
