Germany develops offensive and defensive marine laser systems

The German Federal Office for Equipment and Information Technology, and In-Service Support, provided a formal, notarized contract to MBDA and Rheinmetall to manufacture, integrate and support a system for testing a laser weapon to work on warships.

The system will be manufactured, tested and integrated by the end of 2021. The tests will be carried out aboard the German naval frigate F124 Sachsen in 2022.

This is an amazing development in the history of defence technology, as lasers engage targets at the speed of light, operate with great accuracy and produce very little collateral damage, and Germany will join the United States of America and China in this area that some classify as the real weapon of the future.
